The prompt has become a business. Right now it is one of the most valuable words in technology, and everyone is selling it. Use this prompt and you will get that. Buy my pack and watch what happens. This one starts your business, this one fixes your marketing, this one changes your life. The prompt has become a product, a promise, a shortcut with a price tag.
The prompt you buy will never do for you what they promise. I am not a scientist and I never studied technology. Everything I understand I learned by doing, directly from the machine, most of it long after midnight. Somewhere in those two years I became a technologist, and I built that myself.
In the beginning I did not write my own prompts. I would feed the system what I wanted, the story, the feeling, the scene, and the system would write the prompt and generate the image. I used what it gave me, and it never produced what I saw in my head. I would run it again, dozens of times, and it kept missing. I did not yet understand that I was allowed to change it. I believed the output was simply the output.
Then the defaults began to bother me. Every prompt the system built arrived carrying things I never asked for, a book in the corner, a key on the table, objects and moods that had nothing to do with me. I started asking why. Why is this in my image. Why am I keeping an element I did not choose. The moment I understood that I could take out what was not mine and put in what was, the prompt stopped belonging to the machine and started belonging to me.
Music was no different. When I asked Claude or ChatGPT for a style, the answer was always competent and always generic, because I was the one handing over the decision. Now I do the opposite. When I direct a piece it is not a style, it is a thousand characters of intention, the emotion, the culture, the tension, the exact thing I need a listener to feel. I put so much of myself into the instruction that the result could not be anyone else's.
A prompt is not a shortcut you can buy. It is authorship. Start from one of the packs they are selling and you inherit a stranger's intent, their taste, and the road they walked to reach it, and everything you build on top of it keeps a trace of them. Start from your own question and correct it, patiently, toward exactly what you mean, and the work becomes yours. So does the understanding.
Put what I create now beside what I made a year and a half ago and the distance is not small. The craft is unrecognizable, because the direction finally comes from me.
They keep telling me none of it is possible. It has made me sharper, not duller. It did not erase what makes me who I am. It exposed it.
The prompt is only the entrance. Once I understood I was building something that would keep growing, a single question stayed with me and would not leave.
What am I feeding it.
