I saw a post today from a woman who said artificial intelligence art is taking over our lives and there is nothing we can do to stop it. She said she is done. Just done.
I want to speak to her, and to every single person who feels exactly the way she does right now.
You are not wrong to be scared. You are not wrong to be angry. The companies building AI did not ask permission. The training data was taken. The energy and water cost is real. Artists are being displaced. Writers are being displaced. Voice actors are being displaced. The pace of change is faster than any human nervous system was built to absorb.
Every single one of those concerns is legitimate. None of them is paranoia. None of them deserves to be dismissed.
But here is the harder truth, and I say it as someone who carries the same pain you do.
AI is here. The companies are not going to stop. The technology is not going to pause for our processing time. The displacement will keep happening. And the people who hate it the most will not be the ones shaping what it becomes.
I had a choice 18 months ago. I could let this take everything from me, or I could learn to direct it. I chose to direct it. Not because I was happy about how it arrived. Not because I forgave the data theft. Not because the water usage stopped mattering to me.
I chose to direct it because the alternative was sitting in the pain while other people decided what gets built with this technology. And the people building AI without our input are not the people any of us want deciding what the future looks like.
If you are an artist, a writer, a creator, a human being who cares about originality, you are exactly the person who SHOULD be directing AI. Your taste, your discernment, your refusal to settle for generic output, your insistence on emotional truth, your cultural depth, your humanity itself, that is what AI desperately needs to keep it from becoming the soulless thing we are all afraid it will become.
Hating AI from outside the system does not change what AI becomes. Directing AI from inside it does.
I am not asking you to be happy. I am not asking you to forgive what was taken. I am asking you to consider that your specific human gifts might be the antidote to the version of AI you are most afraid of.
If you are ready, learn one tool. Not all of them. One. And direct it for one week. See what happens when YOUR taste is the thing shaping the output. See what happens when a human who actually cares about beauty, truth, and originality is the one holding the wheel.
You are not done. The future is not finished being written. And the people who care, the ones in pain reading this right now, are exactly the ones the future needs.
